From Fireball Into Chic Silver Fox

Are you thinking of changing from red to blonde, perhaps silver? Is your client suggesting this color change? Are you afraid this will not work?
Well there is a way and I will now show you, how to do so.

There are few things you have to think about before you start the color change. As lightening of hair can cause damage, you have to be aware of a need of haircut. Red hair color may be a tricky pigment to erase from hair. As we all know box dye especially can cause big difficulties in this process. This is why I would suggest leaving the hair to fade out and grow out as much as your client is comfortable with. That way you have a high chance of the lightener to work at only one go. In case you don' t want to risk this, you can always use low percentage of lightener and create a change in two or more sittings. Also use of anti-dandruff shampoo or any medicated shampoo will help break the molecules of hair dye in hair. Use of this for at least a month after last coloring into red will help out surprisingly a lot.

My client did not use any hair dyes for at least 3 months and had a nice large natural root. It has also been end of summer so effect of direct sunlight over the last few months has lifted the color as well. As you can see on added picture her tone looked almost pastel-like before our appointment. We gave ourselves a big goal of balayage with very natural looking effect of almost sunkissed babylights. We really wanted to keep clients root super close to her natural base. This way she will get all her money worth and will be easy to upkeep.

I have used a simple blue powder lightener mixed with 30VOL  in almost 1:1 ratio. Taking diagonal backward sections all over the head and created basic V shaped balayage. I left the roots alone this time around. I could have added a base root color at this stage too. However I decided to do so in second stage with a mid and end toner.
After washing out lightener you want to make sure to use a silver shampoo or any other no yellow shampoo. This is a great pre toner technique. If you don' t do this by now, make sure you give it a go. Changes your entire work!
As root color I went for 7.1 majirel by L'oreal and 20VOL. As toner I mixed WELLAs 12.96 with an activator. This gave the whole look nice ashy tone.
I was really pleasantly surprised with the lift I was able to achieve. This is why I really recommend leaving the hair alone for as long as possible before lightening service.
What do you think? What ways do you choose when approaching this type of color change? Do you use Olaplex or Smart Bond? Or any other conditioning help? What works best for you?

Let me know.
Love, Deni x
